Zera is a three years old Heartless. WHat is a Heartless? I think it some kind of vampirism because the Heartless thrive on raw meat to keep their sanity in check, for if they don’t eat regularly they become raving mad bloodthirsty monsters.

So how is a Heartless born? That moment before death, if a witch takes your heart, well you don’t die, but then you become a slave to that witch, the only way to be free is if the heart of the person is returned by the witch, then you can continue with your life or the witch dies, and so does the Heartless.

That’s all the spoiler I am giving away.

For all the love I have for this tale, it starts off a bit slow, it took me a couple of tries before I could finally focus enough to read and digest it. It’s not like it’s not interesting, because it is, the world is quite intriguing, it’s a normal world as far as it can go, set in a time where there’s scientific advancement, yet still in an age where transportation is by horse-drawn carriages and witches, there’s is glorious magic in this book, and of course I am on the side of the people with magic.

This an Entangled Publishing book, so the romance in it, is everything to write home about, but oh so angsty! the chemistry between Lucien and Zera is scorching, I love the banter between them. The road to them falling in love is mainly the story, with the fantasy elements coming out boldly in between. I love me a romance filled fantasy, I feel there should be more written and executed as well as Sara Wolf has done with Bring Me Their Hearts.

I love Zera, she is a bold character, who despite everything (they don’t consider Heartless to be human, I mean they are undead beings moving around with no heart, but they still can be human again, so I think the disdain for them is completely unwarranted, especially most Heartless did not choose to be, humans can be despicable with their logic) is a kind and extremely compassionate being. Yet she doesn’t let anyone lead her, despite being a slave, she is her own sassy self and I would love to have her as a friend. I absolutely hate the guilt she has forsaken herself with. The guilt of being a Heartless, I mean it wasn’t her choice, and I think it’s unhealthy how worthless she feels she is because she is such an amazing being and more than anything deserves her humanity.

There’s a lot going on and I totally hate the King in the story, he is so weak and unworthy of the throne, ruling by fear can only get you so far and turning a blind eye to suffering is inexcusable, miss me with he’s a grieving father, when you’re the ruler of a kingdom, it’s tough but your kingdom, the people in it should always come first. That’s why I really like Prince Lucien.

The book ends with the worst kind of cliffhangers, I just hate it when the last moments of a tale is so short but covers a lot of ground at once, so many revelations at the end of the book,  that will only leave you speculating with unanswered questions, that you can’t help but ask your bookish god, why the author toyed with your heart so dirtily.

I was given this book in exchange of an honest review, which I have done ever so wonderfully, I can’t wait for the next book in this series and I believe it is one every romance and fantasy lover will enjoy reading. I know my review gives so little away because I want you to please pick up this book and read it.
